The EU Nickel Directive Explained for Jewelry Importers

The EU Nickel Directive is the reason “nickel-free” became a jewelry selling point. For importers, it sets a hard, testable limit.

The limit. Skin-contact parts (earrings, posts, bracelets) must release no more than 0.2 µg/cm²/week of nickel. Posts and wires penetrating the skin are held to an even stricter migration limit.

Testing. Accredited labs use EN 1811 (simulated wear) and EN 12472 (pre-wear abrasion) to measure release. A supplier’s word isn’t enough — ask for the report.

Sourcing. Stainless steel, titanium and properly plated alloys typically pass. Our nickel-free lines are built for this. See the blog’s nickel-free compliance guide for the label meaning.

Why it matters. Non-compliant nickel pieces trigger EU recalls and returns. Documented nickel-free sourcing is your insurance.

Where to source. See the rings category for current best-sellers and new arrivals.
